Maserati has launched a recall in Australia this week for its Quattroporte and Ghibli models, due to a potential problem with the door-locking mechanism.

During normal operation, should the vehicle be stationary and one of the doors is opened, the automatic transmission will self-shift to ‘park’ as a safety precaution.

However, Maserati has identified a weakness with the mechanism in the driver’s door lock, which may see this safety precaution fail.

Should this occur, the driver may not realise the transmission is still engaged in a driving gear and the vehicle could move, causing a hazard to the occupants and other road users.

To Maserati watchers, this Australian recall may sound familiar to a recall undertaken in the US last year, but the local recall is for a separate issue.

Vehicles in the US were recalled to install the self-shifting software, while Australian and New Zealand-delivered models came ready-equipped with the safety device.

The recall process will see a new driver’s door lock fitted and an update to the associated safety software.

A total of 329 cars from the 2014 model-year are targeted by the recall in Australia, with a further 49 cars on the list for New Zealand. There have been no reported incidents arising from this issue in Australia.

Maserati will attempt to contact affected owners shortly, but any owner wishing to learn more about the latest round of recalls should contact their local dealer.
