Mitsubishi has confirmed that its new small crossover will debut wearing Eclipse Cross badges, following earlier speculation that the Eclipse name was a frontrunner for the new SUV model.

Set to be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March, the Eclipse Cross will slot into the Mitsubishi range as a much-needed new model between the aging ASX and Outlander models.

Mitsubishi acknowledges its earlier use of the Eclipse name on a North American market coupe sold from 1989 until 2011, adding the ‘Cross’ designation seemingly to spare any confusion between the two.

Though only teased at this stage, the Eclipse Cross is set to adhere to the styling direction previewed by the XR-PHEV and XR-PHEV II concept crossovers.

Rumoured powertrains for the Eclipse Cross include a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol, 2.2-litre turbo diesel and plug-in hybrid, with both front- and all-wheel drive options depending on the engine.

More information is expected to follow in the lead up to the Geneva Motor Show.
