Here’s another reason to lament the Dodge Durango SUV is not sold in Australia – a new SRT model.

Featuring the 355kW/637Nm 6.4-litre HEMI V8 engine, the awesome addition to the Dodge Durango lineup will be unveiled tomorrow at the Chicago Auto Show.

Dodge says the Durango SRT is the world’s fastest three-row, full-size SUV (with a 3.8-tonne towing capacity in North America). So fast in fact that North American buyers will be offered a full day of tuition at the legendary Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving.

Styling is highlighted by a ‘wide body’ look complete with wheel arch flares and the SRT bonnet which features a large air intake and twin heat extractor vents. There is also a new front fascia with extra air intakes, an SRT grille, a new SRT body-colour lower fascia at the rear and two versions of 20-inch alloy wheels with 295/45 ZR20 Pirelli Scorpion Verde tyres.

Inside, the SRT Dodge Durango picks-up suede-wrapped A pillars and roof lining, a genuine carbon-fibre instrument panel and door bezels, a hand-wrapped dashboard with silver stitching, SRT flat-bottom steering wheel plus heating and ventilation for the two front seats and two second row captain’s seats – and all seats are trimmed in Nappa leather with suede inserts There is also a Light Black Chrome finish for the centre stack and new seven-inch TFT customisable display .

The raucous V8 normally drives all four wheels with up to 65 per-cent of torque sent to the rear wheels via an SRT-optimised eight-speed automatic transmission with rev-matching throttle-blip downchanges. In the new Track mode, up to 70 per-cent of drive is transmitted to the rear.

Launch control is included and in total there are seven drive modes, Auto, Sport, Track, Snow, Tow, Eco and Valet (which very cleverly disables first gear, launch control and the paddle-shifters, sets the ESC to full-on, the traction control, steering and suspension to auto and cuts the engine output to that of a V6).

Stopping comes courtesy of Brembo six-piston front and four-piston rear disc brakes - the fronts are 15-inches in diameter while the rears are 13.8 inches.

Ride and handling are boosted a unique SRT suspension which includes aluminium lower control arms and Bilstein active dampers plus stiffer front springs (3 percent), stiffer rear springs (18 percent) and an 18 percent stiffer rear anti-roll bar.

File this one under ‘A’ for awesome!
