Australia’s new car sales figures are in for January 2017, and the numbers are already stronger than those of 2016 indicating that another year of over one million sales could be possible if the trend continues.

VFACTS reveals at the end of January, 84,910 new vehicle sales resulted in a lift of 0.6 percent compared with the previous year, and while light commercial figures stumbled slightly both passenger cars and SUVs increased.

SUVs now make up 40.2 percent of the Australian new car sales pie, just pipped by passenger cars at 41.1 percent though the gap between the two continues to narrow.

Despite the popularity of SUVs the Mazda3 was Australia's favourite car for January with 3473 sales, down 6.7 percent compared to the previous year, while the Toyota Corolla took second place at 2943 sales, a lift of 6.7 percent.

The Toyota HiLux is the first ute on the list with combined 4x2 and 4x4 sales 2702 units, up 15.4 percent on 2016, with the Ford Ranger and Hyundai i30 in fourth and fifth place, and the Holden Commodore (the only locally produced vehicle in the top ten) in sixth place.

By brand, Toyota sits at the top of the podium with 12,554 sales representing a 14.8 percent share of Australia’s new car carpark the same share as 2016 with a sales increase of just one vehicle.

Mazda sits in second place with 10,067 sales or 11.9 percent, and Holden holds third position some way behind with 7184 sales or 8.5 percent market share, an improvement over 2016 figures.

Australia’s favourite SUV is the Mazda CX-5, sitting at number seven on the sales charts, but with an all-new model scheduled to arrive within the next few months, interruptions to supply could make it difficult for Mazda to maintain its momentum.

Mazda is also the only manufacturer with three top-ten sellers and the only small SUV to make it to the top-ten list with the CX-3 in tenth place.
