HSV has ensured that its locally-produced Zeta platform range goes out with a roar, not a whimper, introducing its quickest and most powerful cars yet with the GTSR range.
Keen spotters will note that the GTSR name varies ever so slightly from the original GTS-R of 1996, and where that car was a single model the new GTSR has grown to a three-variant range with a choice of ute or sedan - the latter of which comes with a choice of two engines.
The highlight of the range, the GTSR W1 is the most track-focussed HSV model yet, powered by a ballistic 474kW/815Nm supercharged 6.2 litre LS9 V8 engine originally developed for the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 and limited to just 300 units.
Unique LS9 features include a four-lobe 2.3 litre supercharger, forged aluminium pistons, dry sump lubrication and a specially-designed carbon fibre airbox, tailored to suit the HSV F2 range’s available underbonnet space.
HSV has done more than stuff a big engine into the GTSR W1 though, with bespoke track-focussed suspension developed by Adelaide’s SupaShock and inspired by Walkinshaw Racing Supercars.
Brakes have also been upgraded with six-piston AP Racing monoblock calipers, Ferodo 4488 pads, and 410mm floating design rotors with race-inspired S-vane cooling technology.
To cap the package off the GTSR W1 also runs super-sticky 265/35 R20 front and 295/30 R20 rear Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R semi-slick tyres.
A high-torque version of the Tremec TR6060 close ratio six-speed manual transmission will be the sole GTSR W1 gearbox option, linked via a new to HSV ZF Sachs twin-plate clutch and solid plate flywheel.
The ‘regular’ GTSR sedan and GTSR Maloo stick with the LSA engine from the GTS, with power stepped up to 435kW thanks to a new K&N high performance air filter. GTSR models also retain HSV’s Magnetic Ride Control suspension, linked to the multi-mode Driver Preference Dial, as well as Continental ContiSportContact 5P tyres.
GTSR models can be identified by new front and rear bumpers featuring matte black detailing and optimised for improved airflow. Also new are 12mm wider front guards featuring a horizontal vent design, capped off with a carbon fibre insert for the GTSR W1.
The sedan rear bumper also picks up new venting while both sedan and Maloo debut new integrated trapezoidal exhaust finishers.
SV Panorama design 20x9-inch front and 20x10-inch alloy wheels in Hyper Dark Stainless on GTSR and GTSR Maloo and matte black on GTSR W1 with a weight-optimised waisted-spoke design extend half an inch wider than the rest of the HSV range.
Inside the GTSR range features HSV Podium front seats finished in diamond-quilted Alcantara and leather on the GTSR and Maloo, with all-Alcantara trim on the GTSR W1. An alcantara-trimmed steering wheel is standard on the W1 and optional on other variants.
