Ever been blinded by bright tail-lights and headlights at night?

Engineers at Mercedes-Benz have, so they've gone to work refining the light characteristics of the GLA-Class of baby SUVs as part of the model's mid-life update. Much like a smartphone, the tail-lamps now have multi-level brightness settings that automatically adjust according to ambient light levels. Super bright in the daytime for optimum visibility, the lights are at their dimmest in stop-start traffic at night, making life easier for people following the new model.

The car's headlights also represent a change in approach. New (optional) high performance LED headlamps trade blue-white illumination for warmer tones that are easier on the eye while removing the need to change light bulbs at any point in the car's working life.

There are plenty of changes between those head and tail-lamps, including new wheels, bumpers and finer details that update the GLA's looks while reducing drag.

Hands-free access to the cabin is now available, allowing drivers to open the boot by waving a foot under the rear bumper, and a 360-degree camera has also joined the options list.

The range has also been bolstered by the addition of a new petrol model – a GLA 220 4Matic which sends 135kW and 300Nm to all four wheels, placing it between the 90kW GLA 180 and 155kW GLA 250 models.

Most of the changes carry over to the range-topping Mercedes-AMG GLA 45, which features the same 280kW four-cylinder turbo engine as before. Changes for the performance model include an optional front limited slip differential and revised gear ratios for a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission borrowed from the smaller A45 hatchback.

The revised GLA 45 is available in a limited Yellow Night edition that features yellow highlights over black wheels and bodywork, lending the compact performance car a distinctive look.

Final specifications including local prices will be confirmed when the car arrives in Australia in mid-2017.
