While American technology company Tesla may have been a frontrunner in the prestige electric vehicle market, the company isn’t going to rest on its laurels when it comes to meeting its prestige competition head-on.

With established automakers including Porsche and Mercedes-Benz set to enter the EV market within the next few years Tesla has begun a recruitment drive to help it lift its quality to a level more akin to its competitors.

Volvo’s former Senior Director of Engineering, Anders Bell, is Tesla’s latest acquisition, with Bell confirming his appointment with Tesla via his LinkedIn profile.

Bell’s position at Volvo concerned interior engineering and his position at Tesla will be broadly similar, looking after interior development from initial concept to final production, Electrek reports.

Previous projects managed by Bell include the 2015 Volvo S60 L as well as the front seat design used in Volvo’s latest range of Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) products, starting with the XC90 in 2015 as well as the S90 and V90 introduced this year.

Despite Tesla’s high-level of powertrain innovation the company has received widespread criticism for the presentation of its interiors concerning everything from a lack of versatile storage to disparities in fit, finish, and presentation when compared to traditional luxury cars.

With Bell’s appointment coming late in the Tesla Model 3’s development program, his influence on the crucial new lower-cost model may be minimal, however the potential still exists to introduce running changes across the range, as well as influencing Tesla’s future product.
