Staff at the high-tech McLaren Production Centre in Woking, outside London, have celebrated production of McLaren road car number 10,000.

Just five years since the first McLaren supercar, an MP4-12C, headed to its eager buyer the 10,000th, a 570S in Ceramic Grey was driven out the door to be displayed at the company’s Heritage Centre.

Showing the pace of supercar development in Woking, it took McLaren 42 months to build the first 5,000 vehicles, but only 22 months to manufacture the second 5,000.

In fact, such is the popularity of the more mainstream ‘Sports Series’ - 540C, 570S, and 570GT - McLaren introduced a second shift at the plant earlier this year and now 20 cars per day are completed.

And compared to last year’s tally of 1,654 sales, this year McLaren is on target for a record of more than 3,000 sales with 90 per-cent of the vehicles produced exported to global markets.

Not surprisingly, McLaren is a profitable venture - the financial year which ended on 30 June was the third profitable year for the company which is very impressive given its start-up only five years ago.

McLaren employs 1,750 people, 750 of them at the production centre.
