Skoda has singled out its all-new Kodiaq, along with the large Superb sedan and wagon, as the first models to feature electric vehicle technology for the brand.

From 2019, the plan at this stage is to offer the pair as plug-in hybrids, according to the UK press, before an all-electric model joins the fray in 2020.

The Superb will reportedly have the honour of being the first Skoda to offer an emissions-free, battery-powered driving experience, but technical details are scarce at this stage.

Also in the unknown category is the EV planned for 2020, with rumours suggesting it will be an all-new model. But China’s preference for the Superb will see it deliver the PHEV experience first.

“We will start with the Superb as it has the strongest following in China, which is where we anticipate the greatest demand coming from,” Skoda boss Bernhard Maier said, speaking with Autocar.

“Some will say we are late to the market, but actually we see 2019 as being a point where demand for such cars will actually start to build to a level that is strong enough to bring down costs.”

Maier said he didn’t care to see Skoda arrive at the marketplace first with an EV, as he is more concerned with delivering an affordable model at a time dictated by buyers.

Skoda’s EVs will align closely with those of parent company Volkswagen, which has also outlined its future all-electric and plug-in hybrid plans.
