When Australian Skoda customers are choosing the Octavia as their next new car, 40 percent of them are opting for the performance RS sedan and wagon variants.

And now buyers have even more reason to opt for the RS, with the availability of the Skoda Octavia RS 230.

Just 70 of the powered-up sedans and wagons (combined) will be available initially, but Skoda Australia is working hard to secure a greater supply. Customers in the short term would therefore be advised to act with urgency if they like the idea of an Octavia RS 230.

Prices start at $41,490 for the sedan with six-speed manual transmission and $43,190 for the wagon with the same gearbox.

For the money, buyers will get the most powerful engine available in an Octavia - a 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol unit driving the front wheels, producing 169kW of power and 350Nm of torque.

While the torque figure is unchanged over the regular RS, power is up 7kW. To make best use of the 169kW, the RS 230 is equipped with, as Skoda calls it, an “electronically controlled front axle inter-wheel lock” (otherwise known as a limited slip diff).

The RS 230 can hit 100km/h from rest in 6.7 seconds, and the official fuel figure is 6.3 l/100km.

Through torque vectoring, the RS 230 can effectively become ‘one-wheel drive’ if required, with 100 percent of available power being channelled to one of the front wheels to aid mid-corner grip.

Other performance goodies include variable power steering, a lap timer function through the trip computer and a selectable driving mode system with Normal, Sport, Eco and Individual being the four choices.

Styling enhancements include 19-inch alloy wheels, a black tailpipe and rear spoiler - available only on the RS 230 - along with gloss black door mirrors and front grille.

Inside, there’s electronically-adjustable black leather sports seats with red stitching, a three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel, sports stainless steel pedals, eight-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation, Apply CarPlay and Android Auto, along with dual-zone climate control and RS signage everywhere.

Plenty of buyers will likely be tempted by the $1700 Tech Pack, which adds automatic park assist, lane assist, keyless entry with push-button start and a ten-speaker premium Canton audio system. The $1700 price tag is around 40 percent cheaper than the combined cost of these options if they were selected individually.

Skoda Australia boss Michael Irmer said the RS 230 was aimed squarely at enthusiasts, while adding that the new-to-Australia model previews future directions for the Octavia RS.

The 2016 Skoda Octavia RS 230 is available now, backed by Skoda’s three- or five-year Care Packs, Service Packs, extended factory warranty and the guaranteed future value scheme.
