New BMW Will Read Speed Limit Signs

BMW has unveiled the latest technology to feature in its upcoming models, this time a system that will read speed limit signposts and variable speed limit signs, displaying the posted limit in the dash.

The system is expected to to be a major boon for travelling around areas that pass through school zones, residential areas, and road works.

“The new BMW Speed Limit Display will significantly reduce the risk of drivers exceeding the speed limit by mistake, especially on roads with multiple speed zones,” says Tom Noble, General Manager Marketing, BMW Group Australia.

The system is built around a camera fitted near the interior rear-vision mirror, which monitors the signs along the roadside. This information is then displayed in either the instrument cluster or the head-up display, advising the driver of the posted limit.  However, the system does not control the vehicle’s speed, but acts more as an information centre rather than a control system.

The new BMW 7 series will be the first model available with Speed Limit Display.
