The Takata airbag saga continues to sink its claws into the local automotive industry, with Toyota the latest to expand on its already-extensive recall program.

The carmaker has today announced that another 179,710 cars are about to be called before the dealers, in order to rectify the potentially-lethal airbags.

As with other Takata airbag recalls, the issue centres around the airbag inflator unit - which can rupture as the airbag deploys during a collision.

If this occurs, metal fragments may strike occupants in the cabin, resulting in injury or even death. To date, Toyota says no such incidents involving its cars have been recorded in Australia.

The latest recall round sees the addition of the Toyota Avensis, Toyota Corolla and Toyota Yaris - all with build dates between March 2007 and December 2011 and all recalled for the front passenger airbag.

Toyota adds that the same models requiring attention to the driver’s airbag have, or will, be included in other recall campaigns.

Due to the enormity of the Takata airbag program, which has seen millions of cars recalled around the world to date, the necessary parts are unlikely to become available until Q2 next year.

The recall process will see the offending inflator unit replaced, taking between 1-3 hours. All works will be performed at no cost to owners.

Toyota will attempt to contact affected owners once parts become available, but any owner wishing to learn more about the latest round of recalls should contact their local dealer or phone Toyota Australia on 1800 987 366.
