Lots of great historic cars on display this weekend in Melbourne at the Motorclassica show, but visitors will get a glimpse of the future BMW-style with the iVision Future Interaction vehicle making its first visit to the Southern Hemisphere.

Based on the upcoming i8 Roadster (but without doors), the iVision is a technical masterpiece which highlights future autonomous driving as BMW interprets it.

A clever steering wheel folds inwards and is illuminated with blue lights when the car is in autonomous mode, returning to its normal position illuminated with red lights when the driver is in control.

The other headline act is BMW’s new ‘Airtouch’ gesture control, which covers many vehicle functions as well as infotainment.

Three sets of sensors span both sides of the dashboard so driver and passenger can operate multiple functions of which many use BMW’s wireless Open Mobility Cloud technology (also operational via the touch-sensitive centre armrest).

A long, narrow high-res 3D screen (110mm high and 400mm long) in front of the passenger displays the various images – and to minimise driver distraction, some functions are only available in autonomous mode (when the driver is control the screen’s display shrinks to only span seven-inches). You can also connect to any ‘smart’ personal devices you have (watch, phone etc) – plus you can access the internet and even make video calls.

Vital information for the driver, such as speed and navigation, is displayed on a new projector version head-up display.

The HUD is also capable of displaying extra information such as what oncoming traffic is doing – even if it is not yet in-sight - and, if necessary, sound alarms for the driver to take appropriate action.
