Volkswagen has taken its Polo light car back to a time when ‘the stereo’ mattered almost as much as the car that contained it…

Introducing the Volkswagen Polo Beats - which as the name suggests, is a collaboration between the German carmaker and a company famous for making oversized headphones.

Volkswagen says its smallest car (in Australia, as the up! is no longer in local showrooms) now makes “the biggest noise”, packing a 300-watt premium sound system wearing the Beats logo.

Besides the two tweeters and two woofers (those are speakers, in case you didn’t know) that one might expect in a Volkswagen Polo, buyers of the Beats edition will also get an eight-channel amplifier and a subwoofer in the spare wheel well.

A set of red Beats Solo headphones is also included in the price, “which can be enjoyed when the Polo is parked”, says Volkswagen.

To distinguish the limited edition model, Beats logos appear on the B-pillar and the home screen of the Composition Media infotainment system.

There’s also a different paint finish for the door mirrors, two-colour ‘Beats' design lower body side decals, 16-inch alloy wheels, darkened tail lamps and a high-gloss black radiator grille.

Inside, more Beats logos feature on the front speakers and the front seats, which are finished in an exclusive Shooting Star cloth and Alcantara trim. Red-stitched seatbelts and ‘Beats Audio’ front door sill plates complete the package.

Production of the Polo Beats for Australia is limited to 400 units.

For those that are interested, the car behind Dr Dre’s stereo is a Volkswagen Polo 81TSI Comfortline, powered by a 1.2 litre four-cylinder petrol engine making 81kW/175Nm. Customers have the choice of either a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG automatic transmission.

The 2016 Volkswagen Polo Beats is on sale now, priced from $21,990 for the manual and $24,490 for the auto - both drive-away and both $2000 above the regular Polo Comfortline models. Options include Pearl Effect paint for $500 and the Driver Comfort Package for $1900.
