Honda’s all-new CR-V mid-size SUV has been unveiled in North America and the big news is a new 140kW turbocharged 1.5-litre engine - a first for Honda’s best-selling model.

The all-new look gives the fifth generation Honda CR-V a more aggressive exterior and inside there is more space courtesy of a longer wheelbase.

In North America the wing-shaped LED daytime running lights will be standard on all model grades and the proportionately longer bonnet flows to a new-look grille which includes a Honda-first in the form of active engine shutters for improved aerodynamics.

We like the muscly fenders front and rear and the sharp new headlights.

And the aggressive look continues at the rear with large, high-mounted tail-lights as well as sharp lines.

A new naturally-aspirated 2.4-litre engine is also available and, like the turbocharged 1.5-litre, it will drive via a CVT automatic transmission.

Underneath are either 17-inch or 18-inch alloy wheels, an all-new chassis with MacPherson strut front suspension and a multi-link rear running low friction dampers. Electric power steering is standard.

Depending on the model grade the all-new Honda CR-V will be front-drive or all-wheel-drive.

Honda is claiming best in-class rear seat legroom for the all-new CR-V.

Infotainment systems are highlighted by a 7-inch touchscreen compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Available technologies include collision mitigating braking, forward collision warning, road departure mitigation, lane departure warning, active cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind spot information, rear cross-traffic monitor and auto high-beam.

Honda Australia says the all-new CR-V will launch locally in the second half of next year but local specifications are still being finalized.
