Audi has used the Paris Motor Show to reveal its second generation Q5 medium SUV, revealing a package that is larger, more specious, yet lighter.

Compared with the outgoing model, the new Q5 rides on a 20mm longer wheelbase and is 30mm longer from nose to tail, with a 2.82 metre wheelbase and 4.66 metre length, while height is 1.66 metres and width is 1.89 metres.

Despite the larger dimensions the new Q5 is up to 90kg lighter depending on specification.

The interior features a rear seat that folds in three sections with optional slide and angle adjustment for the rear bench, with a boot that measures between 550 and 610 litres - 10 litres larger than before.

Audi’s Virtual Cockpit 12.3-inch instrument display is available, as are massaging front seats, 30-colour ambient lighting, a powered tailgate, and rear air-suspension are also available on the options list.

Infotainment comes via an 8.3-inch central display screen, controlled via an Audi MMI (multi-media interface) rotary controller, witha touch sensitive top surface to allow handwritten inputs.

Bang & Olufsen audio, online connected navigation with WiFi hotspot, and a tablet-controlled rear seat entertainment unit will also be offered as options.

“The first Audi Q5 was for many years the world's best-selling SUV in its class. It was no easy task to design its successor, but that is precisely why it is so very exciting,” said Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management at Audi.

“With the new Q5 we are setting the bar a notch higher. Among the great innovations are the quattro drive system with ultra technology, highly efficient engines, the air suspension with damper control and a comprehensive line-up of infotainment and assistance systems.”

Overseas the Q5 will be available with a choice of four TDI diesel engines, with 110kW, 120kW, and two 140kW version (one high efficiency variant). A single 185kW TFSI petrol engine will also be offered at launch.

Power is transferred to either the front wheels, or all-wheel-drive, dynamic steering is optionally available, and the rear air-suspension is available with a lift/offroad mode to further the Q5s SUV credentials.

Audi’s first North American factory in Mexico will be tasked with building the new Q5, with additional factories in India and China producing cars for their respective domestic markets.

Australian deliveries are scheduled to begin in the second half of 2017, with pricing and specification details to be confirmed closer to launch.
