Hyundai has revealed the details of its flagship Elantra model, the turbocharged Elantra SR Turbo sedan. Starting from under $30,000 (plus on roads), it offers improved performance, unique handling, and an upmarket interior to sit it above the regular Elantra range.
Under the bonnet is the same 1.6 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine as found in the Veloster SR Turbo, producing 150kW and 265Nm, or 38Kw and 73Nm nore than the naturally aspirated 2.0 litre engine in the Elantra Active and Elite.
Though not quite as powerful as similar-sized hot hatches, the Elantra SR Turbo offers a power and torque advantage compared to other 'warm' small sedans like the Nissan Pulsar SSS and Mazda3 SP25.
The Elantra SR Turbo also differs from the rest of the Elantra range thanks to a sports-tuned suspension featuring an independent rear, tuned here in Australia for local roads.
A choice of six-speed manual or seven-speed dual clutch transmissions will be available, with the only other option for the Elantra SR (aside from paint colour) being a red leather interior in place of the standard black leather trim.
Standard features include unique sports styling for the front and rear bumpers, side skirts, and grille, 17-inch alloy wheels, upgraded front 305mm front brake discs (25mm larger), sports tail light design, bi-Xenon headlights, and dual chrome exhaust tips.
Inside the Elantra SR is fitted with a black headlining, carbonfibre-look trim inserts, heated front sports seats with electric adjustment for the driver’s seat, flat bottomed sports steering wheel with paddle shifters for the automatic version, powered sunroof, and alloy pedals.
Hyundai’s 7.0-inch multimedia touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity is also standard.
Safety equipment is also boosted with the addition of blind-spot detection, lane change assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and front parking sensors, joining the existing six airbags, rear view camera, and rear park sensors of the rest of the range.
The Elantra SR Turbo also offers three colour choices not available on the rest of the range including Sparkling Metal, Phoenix Orange, and Blazing Yellow.
The 2017 Hyundai Elantra SR Turbo is priced from $28,990 (plus on-road costs) for the six-speed manual or $31,290 (plus on-road costs) for the seven-speed dual clutch automatic. Metallic or mica paint adds an extra $495, and the red leather interior option is priced at $295
