“Look out Tesla” – that was the reaction at the Paris Motor Show when Mercedes-Benz unveiled its ‘Generation EQ’ electric crossover.

‘Benz says the scalable chassis architecture and powertrains developed for the EQ will morph into future electric cars in most market segments from SUVs to two-seat convertibles. Word on the street in Paris says the crossover version displayed could enter production very quickly (including some chassis components in carbon-fibre).

In fact ‘EQ’ will be the Mercedes version of BMW ‘i’ electric sub-brand – so it’s got serious volume aspirations and isn’t just marketing puffery.

“We’re now flipping the switch,” CEO Dieter Zetsche told the media preview in Paris. “We’re ready for the launch of an electric product offensive that will cover all vehicle segments from the compact to the luxury class.”

The concept car revealed in Paris has two electric motors for an output of 300kW/700Nm and covers zero to 100km/h in under five seconds. Range between recharges is claimed to be 500kms.

Inside is impressive technology which is already leading towards autonomous driving (based on the HERE digital mapping which even now has incredible detailing). Details are displayed on a 24-inch TFT hi-res screen with a new 3D digital interface.

Like Tesla, Benz’ EQ brand is much more than vehicles and will eventually include fast charging systems and even home or commercial lithium-ion energy storage units (in fact, Dr Andreas Rueckemann who heads Mercedes Benz Energy was recently in Australia talking to business leaders).

“EQ stands for a comprehensive electric ecosystem of services, technologies and innovations,” Dr Zetsche told the media gathering in Paris.
