There world’s carmakers are firmly focused on the future of the humble delivery van, thanks in part to the recent IAA Commercial Vehicle Show in Hanover.

One of those is Hyundai, which used the show to unveil its H350 Fuel Cell concept.

Like the Volkswagen e-Crafter concept, Hyundai was determined to avoid encroaching on the massive load area with its green power tech. Also, like the e-Crafter, the concept is based on the regular Hyundai H350 van.

Thus, the hydrogen fuel cells used to power the H350 are neatly tucked away with no impact on the loading space. And, unlike a more ‘conventional’ battery-powered car (or van), they only take four minutes to ‘refuel’.

The hydrogen tank holds 175 litres, enabling the H350 to travel up to 422km between fills. As is the way with hydrogen-powered vehicles, the only emission from the tailpipe is water.

Power and torque are rated at 100kW and 300Nm respectively, and the top speed is 150km/h. The battery pack is a 24kWh unit.

With its near-silent operation, Hyundai says the H350 is ideal for night deliveries for minimal impact on surrounding residents.

The load area is either 10.5 or 12.9 cubic metres, depending on the wheelbase, which can be enough space to load five European pallets or up to 14 seats for passengers.

Concepts aside, Hyundai already has a hydrogen-powered vehicle in its ranks with the ix35 Fuel Cell.

The ix35 Fuel Cell is available to the public in parts of the US and Germany, and Hyundai recently secured an order for 20 examples to be trialled in the Australian Capital Territory.
