Bentley broke with tradition with its first-ever SUV, the Bentayga, and now the luxury carmaker is stepping further from its 'Harris Tweed' image with the new Bentayga Diesel.

But in typical Bentley style, power and torque have not been left to chance thanks to the new diesel’s 4.0 litre and eight-cylinder capacity, with figures of 320kW and 900Nm respectively.

The diesel is force-fed by two twin-scroll turbochargers and a supercharger; powered not by the engine but the Bentayga's 48-volt electrical system.

Power is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission, with power split 40:60 front to rear.

Fuel consumption is rated at 7.9 l/100km. Should the Bentley Diesel manage to achieve this fuel figure (it has a stop-start system helping), its 85-litre fuel tank will see it better the 1000km-mark between fills.

For those less concerned about fuel consumption, this Bentley monolith will hit 100km/h from rest in just 4.8 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 270km/h.

To that end, Bentley says the Bentayga is now the world’s fastest diesel SUV.

Changes for the new Diesel model over the existing W12 petrol Bentayga include a custom exhaust system and a ‘twin-quad’ tailpipe setup.

Other visual clues include a different 20-inch alloy wheel design (21-inch optional), black mesh grille and a V8 Diesel badge.

Inside, there’s an eight-inch infotainment screen with satellite navigation (that speaks up to 30 languages) and a 60GB hard drive in the front, while rear-seat passengers get a 10-inch Entertainment Tablet by Android.

A premium audio system is optional with no less than 18 speakers.

Buyers can further customise their Bentaygas with such items as the Mulliner Hamper Set, complete with refrigerator, bespoke fine Linley china cutlery, crockery and crystal glasses, or the bespoke mechanical Mulliner Tourbillon by Breitling clock - which is automatically wound periodically by a dedicated high-precision winding mechanism within the car and is machined in solid gold.

Bentley’s new 48-volt electrical system uses a lithium-ion battery pack. It doesn’t just power the E-supercharger, however, with the system also responsible for powering the Dynamic Ride roll control, electric power steering, traction and stability control systems along with the hill-decent control.

“The Bentayga Diesel represents a moment of immense significance in Bentley’s history, by giving the world its fastest luxury diesel SUV,” Bentley CEO Wolfgang Dürheimer said.

“Immense power, grand touring capabilities and superb refinement - this is a true Bentley. Only Bentley could produce a car so powerful, yet so refined.”

The 2017 Bentley Bentaya Diesel will make its official debut at the Paris Motor Show. An Australian arrival is expected sometime next year.
