An internal company bulletin from a supplier to Fiat Chrysler has revealed that the next generation Jeep Wrangler will feature lightweight aluminum panels for the bonnet and doors.

The bulletin, from aluminium supplier Alcoa details the supply of its product lines 6022 and 951.

The first, 6022, is a high strength, highly formable sheet alloy for use in automotive panels, with the internal bulletin outlining its use for the front and rear door inners, and outer and inner bonnet.

The other product, 951 is a bonding pre-treatment - for use on aluminium panels and structures to provide a more stable, longer lasting bond in applications where panels are unable to be welded or riveted.

A third product, C6A1 - a new alloy from Alcoa will also be the used for the first time on the new Wrangler, though the bulletin doesn’t state which applications it will be used for.

The use of aluminium components comes as no surprise, with head of the Jeep brand, Michael Manley confirming earlier this year that reduced weight was one of the key development goals for the next generation Wrangler.

While the use of aluminium appears to now be confirmed for part of the doors and bonnet, it remains unknown if aluminium, or other lightweight materials will be used elsewhere in the Wrangler’s construction.

The new ‘JL’ series Wrangler is expected to continue with two and four door body styles, with a pick up version also confirmed for the new model.

Production is scheduled to begin in late 2017, with an Australian introduction unlikely to occur before 2018.
