Though Australian specification is yet to be confirmed ahead of the new Rio's 2017 release, the European spec sheet offers a glimpse of the features Australian buyers can expect next year.
Tech highlights include a floating 5.0-inch touchscreen moving up to a larger 7.0-inch screen for high-grade cars, equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, plus a suite of TomTom connected services including live traffic information, weather forecasts, and search functions.
Safety benefits from an autonomous braking system which includes first-in-class pedestrian detection, along with lane departure warning, six airbags, ISOFIX child seat mounts, and a body constructed of 51 percent advanced high-strength steel, enhancing the new Rio’s safety crashworthiness.
Powertrain choices include a new 1.0 litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol available in 73kW and 88kW variants, both producing 172Nm of torque. Naturally aspirated 1.2 and 1.4 litre petrol engines will also be offered with 62kW/122Nm and 73kW/132Nm outputs respectively.
Compared to the 1.6 litre flagship engine in the current range, the most powerful 1.0 litre Rio variant drops 15kW, but gains 5Nm available much lower in the rev range for improved urban driveability.
European buyers will also be offered a pair of 1.4 litre diesel engines rated at 52kW and 66kW, but unlikely to be offered in diesel-averse Australia.
Boot space now measures 325 litres, 37 litres more than the outgoing Rio, while overall dimensions are slightly longer and wider than before, with a stretched wheelbase but slightly lower roofline.
Sales of the new Rio are set to begin overseas in early 2017, with an Australian debut expected shortly after. Full confirmation of the Australian features and specifications is expected closer to launch.
