Mazda’s medium sedan and wagon range has come in for a small revision for 2017, and though the Mazda6 range gives little away from the outside, it’s under the skin that the changes occur.
Though only a minor update, the 2017 model year enhancement for the Mazda6 brings new safety features and new chassis technology, keeping the 6 up to pace with the smaller Mazda3.
The four-variant range remains as before, with Sport, Touring, GT, and Atenza grades offered as a sedan or wagon, with extra refinement work carried out on the diesel engine available in Touring, GT, and Atenza.
Externally the Mazda6 picks up a set of redesigned exterior mirrors (shared with the CX-9) including slimmer concealed indicators as the only give-away for the new range. An auto folding function has been added to Touring and above.
On the inside the Mazda6 comes with a redesigned steering wheel as fitted to the Mazda3 and CX-9, while the range-topping Atenza is now fitted with Nappa leather trim to give it a small luxury boost compared to the upper-mid grade GT.
Both GT and Atenza also pick up heated rear seats (outboard) to go joining the heated front seats, with controls hidden in the centre console. Interior decor trims on the Atenza also move to a brushed titanium look to compliment the titanium coloured seat piping.
The trip computer display in the instrument cluster, and the pop-up Active Driving Display move to colour displays, with the Active Driving Display capable of showing traffic sign information, like speed and stop signs.
Under the bonnet lives the same a 2.5 litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine as before rated at 138kW and 250Nm, or a 2.2 litre turbo diesel engine producing 129kW and 420Nm revised to improve refinement.
Both engines come paired with a six-speed automatic in all grades.
On diesel models a new Natural Sound Smoother (basically a vibration damper mounted inside the piston) helps remove vibration at idle and under gentle acceleration, while Natural Sound Frequency Control decreases diesel knock via engine management for quieter drive.
Further to that all variants benefit from improved door seals, a roof lining sound deadener, and thicker front door glass, while the GT and Atenza also add acoustic front door glass.
All models include blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, rear park sensors, a reversing camera, six airbags, electronic stability control, and ABS brakes plus forward and reverse low-speed autonomous braking (called Smart City Brake Support), as well as maintaining a five-star ANCAP rating.
Moving up to the Atenza adds lane-keep assist, lane departure warning, forward obstruction warning, driver attention alert (fatigue monitoring), and autonomous braking with a higher operating threshold.
