After a long lead-up including previews in both Europe and Australia, the 2017 Renault Megane is ready to roll from Australia showrooms.

Arriving with a four-model range (but no diesel model), the new Megane goes into battle against upper-segment hatches like the Volkswagen Golf and Peugeot 308, delivering a high level of standard equipment and without a bargain-priced stripper-spec model.

Pricing however starts from a reasonable $22,490 (plus on-road costs) for the entry-level Megane Life powered by a carry-over 1.2 litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 97kW and 205Nm.

It comes matched to a five-speed manual or optional seven-speed dual-clutch auto (from $24,990).

Standard equipment includes cloth seat trim, leather-wrapped steering wheel, auto headlights and wipers, dual-zone climate control, 16-inch steel wheels, 7.0-inch touchscreen multimedia, tyre pressure monitoring, rear camera, and rear park sensors.

Next in line, costing $27,490 (plus on-road costs), is the automatic-only Megane Zen. It adds satellite navigation, 16-inch alloy wheels, an electric park brake, and front parking sensors as well as adding the option of a factory-fitted powered sunroof and auto-dimming rear view mirror.

The Megane GT-Line - busting through the $30k barrier at $32,490 (plus) - brings a sportier appearance package plus extra equipment including a standard sunroof, side parking sensors, a 7.0-inch TFT instrument cluster, semi-automated park assist, blind spot warning, Alcantara interior trim, Nappa leather steering wheel, sports seats, rear privacy glass, Multi-Sense driving mode adjustment, and 17-inch alloy wheels.

The GT-Line can also be further optioned with 18-inch alloy wheels and a Premium Pack which adds LED headlights, Bose audio, and an 8.7-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen.

At the top the of the range the Megane GT, at $38,490 (plus), moves into warm-hatch territory thanks to a 1.6 litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing 151kW and 280Nm and paired with a seven-speed dual clutch transmission.

Handling comes courtesy of the Renault Sport performance arm and includes four-wheel steering, sports tuned suspension, upgraded brakes and a launch-control function.

Standard equipment extends to gear shift paddles, alloy pedals, GT-bumpers with dual-outlet exhaust, configurable engine sound (via the audio system), Alcantara interior trim with blue highlights, and 18-inch alloy wheels. The Premium Pack and powered sunroof are also optionally available.
