The Mitsubishi stand at the upcoming Paris Motor Show will feature a new concept called the GT-PHEV, but the carmaker has pulled the covers off early for a pre-show preview.

While GT might normally represent ‘Grand Tourer’, Mitsubishi has swapped this for ‘Ground Tourer’ in a concept said to preview a new-generation SUV.

The concept’s powerplant will be familiar to owners of Mitsubishi’s Outlander PHEV in Australia with its triple-motor, plug-in hybrid setup, suggesting the GT is designed to preview Mitsubishi’s next-gen Outlander SUV.

Outlander PHEV models in Australia have a maximum electric-only range of around 52km before the petrol engine is required to assist, but the GT-PHEV concept stretches this figure all the way out to 120km.

The extra distance provided by the battery pack combined with an improved electricity generation system sees the total distance between fuel fills for the GT-PHEV rated at 1200km.

Again, like the Outlander PHEV, the GT features one electric motor to drive the front wheels and another to drive the rear to equip the concept with all-wheel-drive. Power (when required) and electricity are provided by a petrol engine, but Mitsubishi is saying little else about the secondary powerplant at this stage.

The GT represents a new take on Mitsubishi’s current design language, with the carmaker saying the styling inspires a “sense of adventure”.

The now-familiar ‘Dynamic Shield’ dominates the front end, while the side profile is not dissimilar to the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport.

Inside, the GT-PHEV features a “horizontal dashboard design”, as dubbed by Mitsubishi, with leather trim and a sophisticated information system to manage the electricity consumption which tracks on-road and weather data using sensors and cameras.

Alongside the GT-PHEV concept at the Paris Motor Show will be the Mitsubishi eX concept, which makes a second motor show appearance following its debut in Tokyo in 2015.
