Jeep has recalled its Cherokee SUV in Australia this week due to a potential problem with the wheel flares.

The carmaker says some vehicles may have left the factory without wheel flare protection spats, meaning these units do not comply with ‘Australian Design Rule 42/04 - General Safety Requirement’.

Spats are necessary to protect bystanders from debris which may be kicked up by the wheels and tyres while the vehicle is underway. Should they be missing, there may be an increased risk to bystanders.

A total of 1705 Cherokees are included in the recall, built between February 2013 and the same month of this year.

The recall process will involve an inspection by a Jeep dealer, with missing spats installed where required.

This latest recall marks the second time the Cherokee has been recalled in Australia this week, with the previous recall targeting 7201 Cherokees from 2014-15 for potential wiring problems.

Jeep will attempt to contact affected owners shortly, but any owner wishing to learn more about the latest round of recalls should contact their local dealer.
