The 2017 Mercedes-Benz SLC range has arrived in Australia, coming as a mid-life facelift for the folding hardtop SLK range.

Australian buyers will be offered a choice of four models: the four-cylinder SLC 180, SLC 200 and SLC 300 as well as the flagship Mercedes-AMG SLC 43 (pictured).

The range opens with the SLC 180, powered by a 1.6 litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with 115kW and 250Nm, stepping in as a new entry point to the range with less power (but a cheaper price) than the previous SLK 200 range-opener.

Standard features include 18-inch alloy wheels, satellite navigation, heated leather seats with solar-reflecting properties, DAB+ digital radio, Apple CarPlay, and a reversing camera.

The SLC 200 runs a 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, rated at the same 135kW and 300Nm as before, and the SLC 300 winds outputs up from the same basic engine, with a healthier 180kW and 370Nm.

The SLC 200 also adds electrically adjustable front seats and Dynamic Select driving modes, with the SLC 300 going further with AMG wheels and bumpers, lowered sport-suspension, keyless entry and start, and Airscarf neck heating.

Though the bellowing 310kW/540Nm naturally aspirated V8 of the previous SLK 55 AMG may be gone, Mercedes-Benz has replaced it with the AMG SLC 43 powered by a twin-turbocharged V6 with 270kW and an almost-there 520Nm.

The SLC 43 promises to sprint from 0-100 km/h in 4.7 seconds with a comprehensively revisited dynamics package including new front and rear axles, new engine and differential mounts, and a mechanical limited-slip differential.

Equipment highlights include a bi-modal exhaust, sports seats trimmed in Nappa leather, LED intelligent lighting, Comand Online navigation, Harman Kardon audio, LED ambient lighting, panoramic sunroof, and AMG-developed brakes and suspension.

All variants of the SLC range feature a nine-speed automatic transmission and rear wheel drive.

Standard safety features include fatigue monitoring, autonomous emergency braking, reversing camera, six airbags, and a pedestrian-protecting active bonnet. The SLC 300 also adds adaptive cruise control.
