Nissan and ride-sharing company Uber have teamed up on a new project to be undertaken in London, UK.

From this month, Uber customers in the local area will be able to hail an all-electric vehicle, with Nissan supplying 20 of its Leaf hatches for the trial.

The project will be run in conjunction with the Energy Savings Trust (EST), with the aim of determining the feasibility of running EVs in the ride-sharing service.

Also, the city of London is keen to gauge whether more EVs on its streets will have a positive impact on air quality.

The EST will monitor the results of the trial using driving patterns, while also keeping an eye on London’s EV charging network to see if it’s up to the task.

"We are delighted to be working closely with Uber on what is a very exciting project that could ultimately lead to major improvements in air quality in London and across the UK," Nissan’s Gareth Dunsmore said.

"We are confident this trial will prove a success and that Uber will join scores of taxi and private hire operators across the UK and wider Europe in recognising the financial and environmental benefits of Nissan's market-leading electric vehicles. With the impact of poor air quality remaining a cause for concern, the trial could prove to be a pivotal moment for tackling the challenges in London."

Ubers’s Jo Bertram said customers already associated the brand with hybrid cars, and that Uber was looking to make the jump to all-electric vehicles.

"Our car-sharing service has already saved 1.2 million miles and 211 metric tonnes of CO2. With electric vehicles - and more people sharing their journey and leaving their own cars at home - there's even more we can do," Bertram said.

Uber is also looking to prepare well ahead of time, as London’s planned ‘Ultra Low Emissions Zone’ is set to come into effect from 2020.
