The 2017 Volkswagen Passat range is set to be crowned with a new flagship model in Australia with the introduction of the 206TSI R-Line sedan and wagon in November.

The new addition shares its 206kW 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with the Volkswagen Golf R and Skoda Superb 206TSI.

Torque is rated at the same 350Nm as the Superb (whereas you'll find 380Nm in the Golf R), and 4Motion all wheel drive is standard - as is the Passat’s R-Line styling kit comprising reprofiled front and rear bumpers, deeper side sills, 19-inch alloy wheels, and Dynamic LED headlights.

Acceleration from 0-100 km/h takes a claimed 5.5 seconds in the sedan and 5.7 seconds for the wagon, with a six-speed DSG automatic transmission and adaptive chassis control making up part of the standard equipment list.

On the inside the 206TSI continues its sporting theme with a flat-bottomed steering wheel, paddle shifters, alloy pedals, and leather trimmed R-Line seats. All Passat R-Line models also gain the new Active Info Display that makes its debut in the new Tiguan range this month.

Volkswagen’s General Manager of passenger car sales, Ryan Davies, described the pent up demand for the new flagship model, citing the previous Passat R36, last sold here on 2010 as a pointer to the new model’s potential.

"You need only look around - there’s any number of lovingly maintained R36s on the road," Mr Davies said.

“While the Passat remains one of our most well-appointed and comfortable cruisers, the R-Line is a genuine performance car - not just a sports kit. It’s both a worthy successor to the R36 and a car to throw a fright into the prestige brands.”

When the Passat R36 exited the Austrlian market it offered 220kW and 350Nm from its naturally aspirated 3.6 litre V6 engine, with a 0-100 km/h time of 5.6 seconds for the sedan and 5.8 seconds for the wagon.

Orders are now open for the Passat 206TSI R-Line, starting from $57,990 for the sedan, and 59,990 for the wagon (plus on-road costs). Metallic or pearlescent paint is an extra $700 and a panoramic glass sunroof is also available for $2000.
