A set of alleged patent renderings have been leaked online revealing the all-new Passat-based Volkswagen CC four-door coupe.

However, concerns have been raised as to the legitimacy of the images first shown on Autoblog.nl, with eagle-eyed spotters claiming Photoshop, might have more to do with the images than any lack of patent office data security.

The renders show bodywork which closely follows the design first shown on the Volkswagen Sport Coupe GTE concept displayed at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show.

The patent images show the usual changes made in the move to production, including a less aggressive front bumper treatment, regular pull-type door handles, and more road-friendly smaller alloy wheels.

So what points to the images being ‘fakes’? Some claims point to the reflections shown on the bodywork and in the floor of the images as being highly unusual for a patent application image.

The use of red tail lights (as opposed to leaving them monochromatic like the rest of the image) and variances in image quality around the door handles and lower air intake are other points of speculation.

But there’s no hard and fast rules as to what images can be used for a patent registration, so it simply may be that Volkswagen has included a little more detail than usual this time around.

The timing certainly falls into place, with the current Passat CC fast approaching the end of its life-cycle overseas and having already been dropped from the Australian range.

Images of an updated version of the current Golf have also emerged (above) , showing a redesigned front end, but little else, to carry the Golf through until a new eigth generation moel arrives - the update would only be short-lived however, with a new Golf expected to arrive in 2018.
