Peugeot fans get emailing, tweeting and blogging because the French giant says sporty GTi versions of the 2008 and 3008 compact SUVs could become reality - if there is sufficient interest.

Speaking to the UK media, Peugeot’s product development chief Lauren Blanchet said: “The strategy of the brand is to have upper versions, GT, GT Line and GTi, and this strategy will be developed in all the range.”

He added that there is already the possibility of adding GTi variants of the 2008 and 3008.

While there does not appear to be any suitable powertrain improvements, that would mean styling enhancements inside and out, better wheel/tyre packages and presumably sharper suspension set-ups.

Already under development are all-wheel-drive systems and we know an all-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid Peugeot 3008 is due for launch in 2019 - but that is not a high-performance model.
