Two companies pushing hard for the autonomously-driven future have teamed up to further accelerate development.

Volvo has announced a new partnership with ride-sharing company Uber. The pair will work together to develop “new base vehicles” incorporating both semi- and fully-autonomous technologies.

A combined AU$ 394 million will be poured into the project, with Volvo understandably providing the cars. Uber will then purchase the finished product from Volvo to further its ride-sharing platform which will one day offer passengers the option of self-driven cars.

Once established, Uber plans to add its own touches to the Volvo-sourced autonomous vehicles, while Volvo will simply continue with its push for fully-autonomous cars.

“Over one million people die in car accidents every year - these are tragedies that self-driving technology can help solve, but we can’t do this alone,” Uber’s Travis Kalanick said.

“That’s why our partnership with a great manufacturer like Volvo is so important. Volvo is a leader in vehicle development and best-in-class when it comes to safety. By combining the capabilities of Uber and Volvo we will get to the future faster, together.”

Hakan Samuelsson from Volvo said the carmaker was proud to partner with Uber.

Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) will underpin the new project. SPA already sits beneath models such as the new S90 and XC90.

The announcement of a partnership between Uber and Volvo comes in the same week that Ford CEO Mark Fields stated that Ford plans to put a fully-autonomous vehicle into mass-production within five years.
