Nissan may have one eye on the future with its extensive electric, autonomous and fuel-cell programs, but the carmaker hasn’t given up on the internal combustion engine just yet.
A new ‘VC-T’ (Variable Compression - Turbocharged) engine is set to be uncovered at the Paris Motor Show, wearing the upmarket Infiniti badge.
Nissan says its’s the world’s first production-ready variable compression ratio engine, with 20 years of development behind it.
The engine is a 2.0 litre four-cylinder petrol-powered unit, able to vary its compression ratio anywhere between 8:1 and 14:1. The higher the compression, the more efficiently the engine performs, with the lower ratio compression used to boost performance.
The VC-T system works by varying the reach between the piston and the top of the cylinder chamber by lowering or raising the piston height. As one may expect, the whole system is control by a sophisticated “engine control logic” which determines the compression depending on the driving situation.
Nissan says the benefits aren’t restricted to economy and power, with the VC-T engine bringing reduced noise and vibration while also weighing less than an equivalent fixed-compression engine. It’s also smaller.
"VC-T technology is a step change for Infiniti," Infiniti President, Roland Krueger, said.
"It is a revolutionary next-step in optimising the efficiency of the internal combustion engine. This technological breakthrough delivers the power of a high-performance 2.0 litre turbo [petrol] engine with a high level of efficiency at the same time."
