Volkswagen has revealed its 2017 Crafter van range at the recent IAA Commercial Vehicle show in Hannover, Germany, presenting an all-new vehicle to replace the outgoing model.

Where the previous Crafter shared its underpinnings and sheetmetal with the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter range, the new Crafter goes it alone, with Volkswagen’s commercial vehicle division responsible for the design and engineering from the ground up.

Offered with a range of Euro 6-compliant 2.0 litre diesel engines, the Crafter will be offerd (in Europe at least) with a choice of 75kW, 90kW, 103kW single-turbo engines, and a more powerful 130kW twin-turbo unit.

Torque figures are yet to be revealed, but buyers will be offered a choice of front, rear, or all wheel drive, as well as either manual or automatic transmission, depending on the variant.

Three different vehicle lengths will also be available, with closed body variants offering a range of three different roof heights.

Volkswagen also touts a drag coefficient as low as 0.33Cd, reducing fuel consumption.

Safety systems extend to electronic stability control with trailer stabilisation, side wind compensation system, adaptive cruise control, post collision braking, and a trailer maneuvering assistant.

Front, side, and head airbags are offered for the driver and front passenger, while park sensors, rear cross traffic alert, a reversing camera, and adaptive LED headlights are also available.

Inside a newly-designed interior places a strong emphasis on storage and utility, but doesn’t scrimp on comfort with touchscreen satellite navigation, climate control, and a heated driver’s seat expected to make their way to the options list.

The 2017 Crafter will be built at a new purpose-built production facility in Wrzesnia, Poland. Australian deliveries of the new Crafter are expected to start in the second half of 2017.
