A new chapter in Porsche history is underway with confirmation the first all-electric sports car – based on the Mission E concept car - will be manufactured in Stuttgart, Germany at a new plant near the current facility in Zuffenhausen which makes the 911.

Due for launch in 2019, the all-electric Porsche represents an investment of €1 billion and clearly takes aim at the high ground already assumed by Tesla.

We first saw the Mission E at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show - the purposeful look for the four-door all-wheel-drive coupe is straight from the Porsche design manual with hints of both the 911 and Panamera.

Porsche is claiming around 450kW of power, zero to 100km/h in 3.5 seconds and a pure-electric range of 500kms.

And a fast recharge system will provide 80 per-cent charge in 15 minutes – enough for 400kms.

The battery pack is mounted low and under the centre of the car powering front and rear permanently excited synchronous motors (a similar system as used in the company’s 919 Hybrid race car as driven by Aussie Mark Webber).

The history-making all-electric Porsche will be supported by 1,400 new employees – 900 in production, 300 in development, 200 in administration and 150 in IT/digital positions.

Currently Porsche has 26,200 employees – that number doubled since 2010 to keep-up with demand for the Cayenne and Macan.

Annual production of the all-electric Porsche is said to be 15,000 cars per year.

Porsche’s norm is for annual production of 10,000 vehicles for a model to be profitable – with the Macan selling more than 80,000 per year and the Cayenne and Panamera both north of 70,000 it’s easy to see why the Stuttgart-based company is a jewel in the crown of the Volkswagen Group.

Japan’s Panasonic was named a few months ago as the battery partner for the all-new all-electric Porsche sports car but reports from Europe suggest trade unions within Porsche are pushing for German brand Bosch to garner the supply contract.

Porsche has said further down the track it favours producing its own batteries.
