A trio of enhanced BMW M vehicles have been announced as the German giant celebrates 30 years since the launch of the legendary E30 M3.

Already ranked amongst the most desirable cars on the planet, the M3 and M4 both gain extra performance and sharper dynamics in the ‘Competition’ models which are now available to order.

Under the bonnet, a sports exhaust system lifts output from the twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine by 14kW to 331kW. Torque remains unchanged at 550Nm.

So all three variants shave 0.1 seconds from their zero to 100km/h time – now just 4.0 seconds with the seven-speed M Double Clutch transmission for the M4 coupe

Underneath are 20-inch M Light alloy wheels in a similar design to the M4 GTS, with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres (265/30 R20 front and 285/30 R20 rear).

Suspension springs are 15 per-cent stiffer, anti-roll bars and bushings have been upgraded and both the Adaptive M suspension and Active M Differential have been recalibrated.

Styling changes come from the BMW Individual store with the ‘Shadow Line’ exterior trim bringing high-gloss black to the kidney grille, front fender gills, window trims and the quad tailpipes.

Changes inside see BMW M stripes stitched into the seat belts and exclusive M leather seats with weight-saving (and good-looking) cut-out elements.

Of course the BMW M3 and M4 already boast staggering levels of standard equipment including extensive leather trim (including the dashboard), a 16-speaker Harman/Kardon audio system, active cruise control with braking function, surround-view cameras, lane-change warning, park distance conrol front/rear and adaptive LED headlights.

BMW 30 Years M3

Of special interest for BMW fans is the ’30 Years M3’ Special Edition.

Only 500 of these vehicles will be produced for worldwide sale and they’re all painted in ‘Macao Blue’ – a metallic colour which was optional on the first E30 M3.

BMW Australia has secured just 30 ’30 Years M3’ Special Edition vehicles and they’re priced at $154,615 (plus on-road costs).

The limited edition model is based on the M3 Competition variant so it scores that vehicle’s 331kW/550Nm twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine and sharper suspension calibration.

Apart from the Macao Blue paintwork, externally the limited edition M3 features front fender M gills in high-gloss black with ’30 Jahre M3’ badges.

Inside, look for lightweight M sports seats in Black/Silverstone Merino leather with ’30 Jahre M3’ logos embroidered in the headrests.

Those logos also feature on the high-gloss black M door sills and on a carbon fibre trim panel which also includes the car's individual build number.
