Mitsubishi has addressed a major criticism with its Pajero Sport 4WD wagon, which arrived in Australia last year replacing the Challenger.

Buyers hoping to secure the all-new model with a seven-seat interior were disappointed to learn that Mitsubishi was only offering the Pajero Sport as a five-seater.

From today, however, the Pajero Sport is now available with seven seats.

The mid-range GLS and Exceed variants will now feature seven seats as standard. In more good news for Mitsubishi customers, the carmaker has added two seats but retained the existing starting price for both.

The entry-level GLX variant remains a five-seat only model, for now.

As part of the shift to seven-seat models, Mitsubishi has fitted roof-mounted ventilation for second and third row passengers in all models. This includes the GLX which, as mentioned, has no third row of seats - potentially leaving the door open for Mitsubishi to add a GLX seven-seater to the Pajero Sport range in the future.

Upon announcing the additional seating, Mitsubishi reminded buyers that the Pajero Sport is already equipped with airbags to protect the extra occupants. Full-length curtain airbags are standard in all Pajero Sport models as part of a seven-airbag safety package.

The second row seats can be folded 60:40 as before, while the new third row seats can be folded to create a flat storage area. A cargo box is also fitted below the third-row seats.

Otherwise, the Pajero Sport for Australia remains unchanged from its specification at launch last year, including the 2.4 litre turbo-diesel engine matched with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
