If you’ve been lusting after the piping-hot MINI JCW but its three-door only configuration was a deal-breaker, you may want to consider the limited-edition MINI Carbon Edition.
Based on the Cooper S five-door hatch, the MINI Carbon Edition not only features similar bumpers, side skirts and wheels to the JCW, but it gets a mild 14kW power boost and a 20Nm bump in peak torque to take its performance closer to that of the full-fledged MINI JCW hatch.
With 155kW of peak power and 300Nm of torque, the Carbon Edition’s 2.0 litre turbo inline four is only 15kW and 20Nm shy of the JCW’s outputs. Peak torque is produced between 1350-4600rpm.
Equipped with a six-speed automatic with paddle shifters as standard, average fuel consumption is identical to a regular Cooper S five-door at 5.5 l/100km.
MINI doesn’t mention what impact the power boost has on the Carbon Edition’s sprint time, but expect it to be swifter than the standard car’s 6.8 second 0-100km/h stat.
Other unique features include a dual-mode sports exhaust with carbon fibre tips, with a valve able to be opened remotely to reduce restriction and add some decibels.
Dynamic damper control is standard on the Carbon Edition too, able to toggle between a comfort or performance-oriented tune. Alas the Carbon Edition misses out on the JCW's more capable brake package, instead 'making do' with the standard Cooper S' sliding calipers.
Besides its JCW-sourced bumpers the Carbon Edition wears a carbon-fibre bonnet scoop and mirror caps, while a unique decal package is applied to the doors, bonnet, roof and hatch. LED headlamps, LED foglamps and a panoramic sunroof are also standard.
In-cabin equipment includes sports seats upholstered with dinamica and leather, a black headliner, stainless steel sports pedals, an 8.8-inch infotainment display with sat-nav, dash-mounted dials for oil pressure, boost pressure and a stopwatch/lap timer, plus JCW door sill trims.
Of course, a numbered Carbon Edition plaque is affixed to the interior and is accompanied by an ownership certificate.
Only 40 Carbon Editions will be offered in Australia, with a pricetag of $56,900 driveaway. Right now, it’s the closest you’ll get to a five-door JCW.
