Honda’s already-strong presence at this year’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb has been boosted with the official unveiling of its NSX supercar-inspired EV concept.

Called, not surprisingly, the NSX EV Concept, the new racer joins two ‘regular’ NSX hybrids as competitors at the 100th running of Pikes Peak, both of which were unveiled earlier this month.

The EV Concept will race under Honda’s Acura arm in the Electric Modified Class, powered by a newly-developed version of Honda’s all-electric, four-motor Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) powertrain.

The SH-AWD racer won last year’s Challenge Exhibition Class at Pikes Peak, and a pair of EV racer claimed first and second positions outright for the first time in the event’s history.

Handling the SH-AWD technology on that occasion in the body of a Honda CR-Z was Tetsuya Yamano, who will front up for Honda again this year to drive the NSX concept.

For 2016, Honda has tripled the total system output from its SH-AWD system, while also adding a new four-wheel independent torque allocation system.

Honda said it has applied changes to its in-car race systems learned from last year’s Pikes Peak event, using more of the available torque from the electric motors channelled individually to each wheel.

The carmaker says the combined changes will see the NSX EV Concept perform well on Pike’s 156 corners, taking in a 19.9km course which sees the drivers and their vehicles rise from 2862m to the finish line at 4302m above sea-level.

“We’ve been tuning the car for several weeks at Pikes and have advanced its performance significantly,” Yamano said.

“We’re honored to be running at Pikes in this historical, anniversary year - an event respected by racing fans all over the world.”

The 2016 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb event starts on June 26.
