Although hardly out of date, having debuted in 2014, development work on a successor to the McLaren 650S is well under way, with reports that a new generation car will make its public debut early in 2017.
That car, being developed under the P14 codename is yet to be officially named, but a higher numeric value is expected to accompany its arrival, tied to a higher output figure.
Rather than an all new vehicle the P14 will feature a further development of the existing twin turbo V8 engine used across the McLaren range, with outputs increased beyond the current 478kW and 678Nm of the current car.
Under the skin the new car will also redeploy the carbon fibre MonoCell that underpins the current car, with changes made to help decrease weight, increase stiffness and improve interior access, thanks to lessons learnt from the more passenger-friendly 570S.
“It’s about being smart with the component set, developing what you need to give unique character and definition to a vehicle,” McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt told UK publication Autocar.
“But equally being as investment-efficient and engineering-efficient as you can.”
Styling is also set to mark a departure from the current car, which is itself a development of the form language established by McLaren’s MP4-12C. Expect a more radical looking package, set to silence critics of the ‘anonymous’ styling of the current range.
As the lead model in McLaren’s Super Series range the 650S replacement will be the first in a range of vehicles which will likely grow to include a new Spider, as well as higher performance variants in the vein of the 675LT.
Those variants will be rolled out progressively across the lifecycle of the new Super Series range, but the first look at the P14 will likely take place at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
