Mercedes-Benz has wasted no time kicking off its push to add more electric vehicles to its range, with a new SUV EV concept set to be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show.
Now, the UK’s Autocar reports that the new EV concept will be more than just an eye-opening show car for Benz’s Paris Motor Show stand, instead serving as a preview of the company’s future road-going EV models.
An unnamed Benz source said to have insider knowledge reportedly revealed “we’ve created a whole new look that takes into consideration the unique properties of electric vehicles”.
This directive includes exterior and interior styling, technical features, battery packs and electric motors. The numbers relating to range and output will be important, as Mercedes has done little to mask its intentions to tackle Tesla’s Model X SUV head-on with a model of its own.
To that end, the new EV SUV may share only a relative handful of its major components with the existing GLA or GLC models.
Mercedes is said to be eyeing off a 2019 debut date for the road-going version of its EV SUV, and the model is believed to be designed around an autonomously-driven future.
As a means of enforcing its future EV plans, Mercedes-Benz’s Ola Källenius has revealed that the carmaker is also considering an entry for the all-electric FIA Formula E racing series.
