Earlier this year Volkswagen confirmed that Australian customers would be offered the most powerful factory-built Golf GTI ever to celebrate the Golf GTI’s 40th anniversary. Today that celebration continues with the announcement of a six-speed manual variant.

Known as the Golf Clubsport in Europe, the Australian Golf GTI 40 Years ramps power and torque up to 195kW and 380Nm of torque, with a 10-second 213kW overboost function.

Those outputs put the GTI 40 Years right in the middle of Golf R territory, but unlike the all-wheel-drive R, the Golf GTI 40 Years remains front-wheel-drive only.

To help channel that extra urge the Golf GTI 40 Years will come equipped with adaptive chassis control, and an electronically-actuated mechanical diff-lock, along with larger 19-inch Ruby alloy wheels and an upgraded brake package.

The six-speed manual version matches the specifications of the previously announced six-speed DSG model, however where the auto can sprint from 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds, the manual takes 6.0 seconds.

On the outside, the Golf GTI 40 Years stands apart thanks to a new front bumper featuring enlarged air intakes, new rear diffuser, extended side-sills, a two-piece rear spoiler, black stripe package, mirror caps, and roof, and a choice of Pure White or Tornado Red exterior paint.

Other 40 Years upgrades include the tinted LED tail-lights from the Golf R, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, and front assist with city emergency braking.

The Golf GTI 40 Years manual will start from $46,990 plus on road costs, and the DSG automatic from $48,990 plus on roads with the sole available option being a panoramic sunroof for $1850.

The Golf GTI 40 Years edition is available to order through Volkswagen dealers nationally with deliveries set to begin in the third quarter of 2016.
