A recent Aston Martin trademark filing in Europe points to a new member of the Aston Martin family, but with the British sportscar firm readying a slew of new vehicles, the DBZ badge could be applied to any of them.
Industry pundits speculate that the DBZ moniker could be affixed to any of either the next-generation Rapide, Aston Martin’s upcoming hypercar collaboration with Red Bull, or a future Aston Martin EV.
But, a closer investigation of filings registered with the European Union Intellectual Property Office reveals that while Aston Martin has applied for a trademark on the DBZ word, Andrea Zagato holds a previous filing for a DBZ logo (below).
What does that mean? While sheer guesswork, it indicates that Mr Zagato, CEO of coachbuilding firm Zagato, could conceivably apply that stylised logo to a low-volume production vehicle using Aston Martin mechanicals.
Aston Martin and Zagato’s collaborations stretch back as far as 1961, with the most recent Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato having been revealed last month at the 2016 Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este.
But while that car will likely keep the Vanquish name from its donor vehicle if it makes it to series production, there’s still the chance of another Zagato-designed Aston in the wings.
Despite having only been revealed at this year’s Geneva Motor Show in March, the new DB11 coupe could be in line for the Zagato treatment.
The DBZ badge could also potentially feature on a bespoke customer-commissioned car, not dissimilar to the Aston Martin Centennial coupe and roadster which were based on the outgoing DB9.
Of course there’s also the possibility that Aston Martin is simply keeping the name up its sleeve. That said, with the filing reserved for use on “passenger cars, racing cars and car bodies”, it looks as though at least one of those will wear the new name.
