The Genesis G80 - currently known here as the Hyundai Genesis - has debuted in its home market of South Korea sporting two key updates: a performance-oriented G80 Sport grade and a twin-turbocharged 3.3 litre petrol V6.

Shown last week at the Busan Motor Show, the G80 Sport features an all-new, larger-vented front bumper, a quartet of stainless exhaust tips, a faux rear diffuser, black cross-hatched grille and dark wheels, while a new three-spoke steering wheel, deeper-bolstered sports seats and a wireless phone charging pad round out the interior changes.

Adaptive LED headlamps are also new for the 2017 model year update, and the non-Sport G80 lineup also receives a cosmetic freshen-up.

Under bonnet is something new too. The existing car’s 3.8 litre naturally-aspirated V6 will continue to see service in the Genesis G80, but in South Korea and abroad (including Australia) that engine will be joined by a 272kW/510Nm twin-turbo 3.3 petrol V6.

That motor will - in the US market at least - fill the gap between the atmo 3.8 litre and the full-fruit 5.0 litre V8 flagship. The V8 is not expected to make it to Australia.

Hyundai has previously confirmed that the current Hyundai Genesis will adopt the new Genesis G80 moniker sometime in 2017, however a precise changeover date - as well as prices and specifications - has yet to be announced.

It’s also unclear whether the 3.3 litre twin-turbo V6 will join the local range. The existing 3.8 litre motor is expected to remain.

Given the popularity of sporty styling packages on other luxury marques like Audi, Mercedes-Benz and BMW, the G80 Sport grade is likely to make its way over here, though has yet to be confirmed.
