Volkswagen has recalled a trio of its commercial and passenger vans in Australia this week, due to a potential problem with the passenger side airbag.

The carmaker has identified a weakness with the front left side airbag, which may not deploy as intended during a collision.

Incorrect folding during the airbag packing process could be to blame.

Airbags failing to deploy as intended could reduce their effectiveness during a collision, causing a hazard to the vehicle occupants.

Affected models are all from the 2016 model-year, and include the T6 Transporter, Multivan and Caravelle. A total of 268 vehicles are targeted in the recall in Australia.

Another on the airbag recall list for Volkswagen is its Touareg SUV, which was recalled last month.

Side airbags are again the focus for the Touareg, as they may be able to tear when the airbag is deployed.

Volkswagen will attempt to contact affected customers shortly, but any customer wishing to learn more about the latest round of recalls should contact their local dealer or call Volkswagen on 1800 504 076.
