As a natural accompaniment to the newly unveiled A5 coupe range, the hi-po 2017 Audi S5 coupe has made its global debut in Ingolstadt overnight.

Just like the less powerful A5 models that sit beneath it, the S5 is built on Audi’s modular MLB platform - the same one that underpins the A4 - allowing lighter construction and improved aerodynamic performance.

At the heart of the new S5 lies a 3.0 litre turbocharged V6, producing 260kW of power, outgunning the previous S5’s supercharged V6 by 15kW and promising a 0-100 km/h time of 4.7 seconds.

Final fuel consumption figures are yet to be officially verified, but Audi indicates a preliminary 7.3 l/100km.

Drive is taken to Audi’s quattro all-wheel-drive system via an eight-speed tiptronic automatic. An optional rear-axle sport differential is also available.

Stylistically, the S5 sticks to Audi’s evolutionary approach, taking familiar cues from the outgoing A5 and S5 coupe range, but dialling in the blistered guards, straked bonnet, and flatter grille as previewed by the Prologue concept series.

To set the S5 apart, a more aggressive front bumper with deep faux-intakes, restyled rear bumper with contrasting diffuser and quad exhaust-tips, silver mirror caps, rear lip-spoiler and larger alloy wheels make up the cosmetic differences.

Inside, the S5 adopts an almost carbon-copy interior from the A4 range, featuring Audi’s horizontally-styled dash, wide console, and available Virtual Cockpit instrument cluster.

Interior dimensions have grown slightly, noise levels have been reduced, and boot space gains an additional 10 litres to 465 litres to more easily squeeze in a couple of golf club bags.

Audi boasts that safety systems are either all-new, or extensively redesigned, including active lane assist, adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist, cross traffic assist rear, exit warning, collision avoidance assist and turn assist, Audi pre sense systems, and camera-based recognition of traffic signs.

Due to go on sale in across Europe before the end of 2016, expect a debut in the first half of 2017 for the A5 and S5 range in Australia, with specific timing and Australian specifications yet to be confirmed.
