Toyota has given its midsized Camry sedan a rethink for the Australian market in 2016, bringing new equipment and cosmetic changes to some models.

The mid-range Atara SX variant gets the lion’s share of the attention, picking up an expanded Toyota Link connectivity platform with satellite navigation on a larger touchscreen - now seven-inch.

A premium audio system with DAB+ digital radio is also part of the Atara SX upgrade, along with an improved reversing camera and a powered rear-window sunshade.

Outside, the Atara SX picks up new 18-inch alloy wheels, red inserts along the lower edge of the front grille and the same red treatment for the rear-bumper diffuser.

Elsewhere in the range, all Camrys now feature ISOFIX child restraint fittings as standard in the rear, and all models are now Euro 5 emissions compliant.

All models but the entry-level Altise score front and rear corner parking sensors, while the Atara S also gets a new 4.2-inch TFT multi-information display for the instrument cluster.

The range-topping Atara SL gets a wireless mobile phone charging-pad, and 18-inch alloy wheels combined with a more sporting suspension tune are available as an options package.

Engine options remain unchanged for 2016, with a 133kW/231Nm 2.5 litre four-cylinder petrol engine standard in all variants, rising to 135kW/235Nm for Atara models with a dual exhaust.

Fuel economy is rated at 7.9 l/100km, and the petrol engine is matched exclusively with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Optional on all models except the Atara SX is a petrol-electric hybrid powerplant matched with a CVT automatic, making a combined 151kW from its 2.5 litre four-cylinder engine and electric motor. Fuel consumption for the Camry Hybrid is rated at 5.2 l/100km.

"Toyota will continue to build on Camry's success with advances in technology, safety, comfort and convenience, value and driving enjoyment, ensuring it remains one of Australia's favourite cars for many years to come," Toyota Australia’s Tony Cramb said.

"Families and business owners will appreciate the added appeal of the new features, while the introduction of the new-technology wireless phone charger will give Camry an edge in the competitive prestige segment above $35,000."

The 2016 Camry range still consists of seven models, kicking off with the petrol-powered Altise at $26,490 and rounding out with the petrol-electric hybrid Atara SL at $40,440 - plus on-road costs.

While the Atara SX gets most of the fruit from the 2016 upgrade, Toyota has raised the starting price for this model from $31,990 to $33,490 plus on-roads as a result. The carmaker says the added value equation from the new standard equipment more than compensates for the higher price.

The 2016 Toyota Camry range goes on sale from next month.
