Infiniti will look to hybrid technology to power its more performance-oriented models in the future, according to reports out of Europe.

The carmaker’s European boss François Goupil de Bouille said hybrid powerplants were the right direction for Infiniti to tackle the sales-might of Germany’s ‘big three’.

However, Goupil de Bouille also has his eye on the performance equivalent for each, in the form of Audi RS, Mercedes-AMG and BMW’s M division.

To that end, Goupil de Bouille said that powered-up hybrid systems could power a range of halo performance models for Infiniti, with the Europe-arm boss admitting that these models will become necessary for the company to grow.

“Having halo cars is important, but historically brands develop their base and then add in these higher-end models,” Goupil de Bouille said, speaking with the UK’s Autocar.

“One day the question will come for Infiniti, but at the moment our focus is on building the core.”

Infiniti is said to be looking to its Formula 1 program for technical advancement and inspiration, given F1’s use of power units with hybrid technology for the past few seasons.

“[If] you look at what we are doing in F1 then you can see some possibilities,” Goupil de Bouille said.

“We worked closely with Red Bull, but now with Renault we are more integrated than ever and have taken charge of the hybrid modules on the F1 car.”

Goupil de Bouille said the F1 program was an indicator as to Infiniti’s future direction, but no new models have been locked-in at this stage.

The company’s Europe boss reportedly believes Infiniti needs to establish its own identity in the performance car market, rather than mirror the strategies of its rivals.
