The latest round of ANCAP test results have arrived, and the good news for small and micro car buys is that both the Hyundai Elantra and Kia Picanto received five-star results

The Elantra scored 35.01 out of a possible 37 points under the ANCAP test regime, scoring maximum points for side impacts testing with 16 out of 16 points, and pole-impact testing, scoring two out of two points.

Seat belt reminders in all seats also resulted in a three out of three point score for the Elantra; it also scored 14.1 out of 16 points in ANCAP’s frontal off-side crash test.

“We’re very proud of Elantra’s 5-Star ANCAP rating,” said Hyundai Motor Company Australia Chief Operating Officer, Scott Grant.

“This is tangible recognition of Hyundai Motor Company’s continued focus on advanced passive and active safety systems.”

The Elantra also received a “good” whiplash protection rating and an “acceptable” pedestrian protection rating.

Meanwhile, sister-company Kia also scored well with its new micro car, the Picanto.

Full-points scores on the pole impanct test (two out of two) and seat belt reminders (three out of three) join a frontal offset score of 15.12 out of 16 and a side impact score of 14.14 out of 16.

The Picanto’s whiplash protection was rated as “acceptable” while pedestrian protection received a “marginal” rating.

Overall the Picanto scored 34.26 out of a possible 37 points resulting in a five-star result.

“The Kia reinforces that safety should not be restricted by budget with the Picanto providing an affordable 5 star vehicle choice,” ANCAP Chief Executive Officer, Mr James Goodwin, said.

Both the Mitsubishi Mirage and Holden Spark are also five-star recipients in the class, while the Suzuki Celerio and Nissan Micra offer four-star protection.
