The three-door MINI John Cooper Works hatch will soon be joined by a topless sibling, with the unveiling of the go-fast convertible model overseas.

With the rest of the MINI Convertible range having only recently gone on sale in Australia (read our review here), it will take a little while for this newest variant to reach local shores.

When it does, expect the same 170kW and 320Nm turbocharged 2.0 litre engine as the hatch, paired with either a six-speed manual, or six-speed automatic transmission driving the front wheels.

MINI quotes a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 6.6 seconds for the manual transmission, or a slightly more spritely 6.5 seconds for the automatic, while fuel consumption is rated at 6.5 l/100km for the manual and 5.9 l/100km for the auto.

The new model offers a 15kW and 60Nm bump in power and torque over the outgoing JCW Convertible, trimming acceleration times by 0.3 seconds.

Peak torque arrives from a low 1250rpm all the way to 4800rpm, with peak power available at 5200rpm.

For the first time, operation of the roof is fully-electric taking just 18 seconds to open or close, at speeds of up to 30 km/h.

A sliding function, which operates similar to a sunroof is also available at all speeds, offering a 40cm opening to let the sunshine in.

To ensure none of the hatch version's rigidity is lost, the Convertible is equipped with additional bracing to keep the chassis taut. This includes strengthened side sills, a stiffening plate underneath the engine, and front and rear underbody torsion struts.

Like its fixed-roof counterpart, the John Cooper Works Convertible offers 17-inch alloy wheels, JCW specific suspension, Brembo brakes, a John Cooper Works body kit, and JCW sports seats.

Sports instrumentation, a head-up display, LED headlights, rear view camera and rear park distance control are also offered as standard.

Those looking for more will be offered the option of a 'MINI Yours' soft top, with a Union Jack design, dual-zone climate control, LED ambient lighting, an 'Always Open' timer (to monitor how much time the car spends with the top down), and MINI Connected online services.

Full features and specifications for Australian delivered John Cooper Works Convertibles will be available closer to the local launch, set for the second half of this year.
